Are Manufacturing Workers Really Worth Their Pay? WPS/94-12
نویسنده
چکیده
That is, countries with more skilled labour should have higher productivity than countries with less skilled workers, 1 holding all factors constant. Bartel and Lichetenberg (1987) show that firms with new capital stock have a higher demand for educated workers 2 relative to uneducated workers because skilled workers are able to implement innovations more quickly and thereby reduce a firm's costs of adjustment. Layard and Fallon (1975) run crosscountry production functions on 23 countries to test thècapital-skilì 3 complementarity hypothesis. They find that the share of physical capital in national income falls as the share of human capital rises. Quite a substantial literature was written during the 1970s on the effects of education on farmer efficiency. See Lockheed 4 et al (1980) for a good summary of the main findings of these studies.

This report explores the impact of an innovative compensation system on the development of literacy skills among manufacturing and assembly workers in a high performance organization. The “pay-for-knowledge” (PFK) compensation system ties workers’ wages directly to the work-related skills and knowledge they demonstrate. By developing additional jobrelated skills, workers directly increase their...
متن کاملSpatial Inequality for Manufacturing Wages in Five African Countries
This paper uses data on individual earnings in manufacturing industry for five African countries in the early 1990s to test whether firms located in the capital city pay higher earnings than do firms located elsewhere, and whether such benefits accrue to all or only certain types of workers. Earnings equations are estimated that take into account worker characteristics (education and tenure) an...

Citing a lack of information, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency prudently did not account for the benefits of averting many chronic diseases in analyzing the Worker Protection Standards (WPS) revisions. We demonstrate that sufficient information can exist, using the example of the benefits to agricultural workers of reduced Parkinson's disease (PD) due to reduced pesticide exposure. We d...
متن کاملNber Working Paper Series Measuring What Employers Really Do about Entry Wages over the Business Cycle
In models recently published by several influential macroeconomic theorists, rigidity in the real wages that firms pay newly hired workers plays a crucial role in generating realistically large cyclical fluctuations in unemployment. There is remarkably little evidence, however, on whether employers’ hiring wages really are invariant to business cycle conditions. We review the small empirical li...
متن کاملA bi-level mathematical programming for cell formation problem considering workers’ interest
Nowadays, the necessity of manufacturers’ response to their customers’ needs and their fields of activities have extended widely. The cellular manufacturing systems have adopted reduced costs from mass-production systems and high flexibility from job-shop manufacturing systems, and therefore, they are very popular in modern manufacturing environments. Manufacturing systems, in addit...
